Why Agarwood Is So Expensive | So Expensive

For thousands of years, agarwood has been known as "The Wood of the Gods." First-grade agarwood can cost as much as $100,000 per kilogram, making it one of the most expensive raw materials in the world. Aquilaria malaccensis is a tree native to the rainforests of southeast Asia. The healthy heartwood inside Aquilaria trees is pale, odorless, and worthless. In order for this tree to produce any agarwood, it must first become infected with mold. So how does this infection process work? What is agarwood used for? And what makes it so valuable?

  • I invented a new aroma. It is obtained by injecting people with a fungus that grows inside their flesh and intestines. You can tell when they're ready to be harvested by their complexion and their health (their skin is brown and they can't even get out of bed or talk anymore). Before they die (you have to do it while they're still alive otherwise you'll ruin the aroma) you scrape off the remaining skin and flesh not infected, then you chop off their limbs, cut their interiors into small pieces, grind them and produce a fine powder. The smell is heavenly but the amount of powder you can obtain from a single adult is average 5% of his total body mass. You need some dozens guys to produce 1 liter. Maybe I'll start a business in Vietnam, people there seem to have very juicy meat. Lots of money and a new, promising business. Who wants to come with me?
