What Happens To NYC’s 3.2 Million Tons Of Trash | Big Business

New York City is one of the most wasteful cities in the world. But none of its trash is actually processed in NYC. It's sent to waste-to-energy facilities and landfills as far away as Ohio and South Carolina. It takes a vast network of sanitation workers, trucks, trains, cranes, and barges - and $429 million a year - to get it there.

What Happens To NYC’s 3.2 Million Tons Of Trash | Big Business

  • 7:16 New Yorkers in 1881: "There's too much garbage pilling up on the streets. So let's clean everything up." Meanwhile in modern India: "There's too much garbage on the streets. Clean up? Forget it. That's too much hassle plus no one really cares. Let's just chill and learn to live with garbage." The difference.

  • When I was in grade school in the early '60's I remember a story My Weekly Reader (anyone else remember that?) did on New York's trash and I distinctly remember photos of barges LOADED WITH TRASH being taken out to be dumped in the ocean. Sorry to say they did not have the foresight to microfiche (another blast from the past) the copies. I still remember a lot of the articles and would love to find copies. I had 5 years worth that my brother destroyed.

  • I worked overnight at St. Peter's College, Jersey City at night. The sulfur from the fallout from the incinerator plants would cover my car. I would have to wash it everyday. The smell in Jersey City was soo bad, there would be air freshener trucks that would drive up 1&9 spraying the air with fragrances. I don't miss NJ at all.

  • An amazing feat, to be sure… but all I see is half a trillion dollars of economic inefficiency a year. It’s not impressive, it’s totally wasteful and a net energy loser, just on the physics of it alone. What if a cyber attack stopped that entire system from working? New York city would be crippled in less than 72 hours. All, with the press of a key. 👁 They don’t even have to fight you. They’ll just drown you in your own shit. Has C19 taught y’all nothin’?

  • Not really a fun fact but a fact, The garbage is token then processed and converted into energy and that energy is used to process a lot of things that will make money back, it's all you're doing is seeing somebody that has an idea of utilizing trash for energy instead of giving it back to you for free they charge you money for it or instead of explaining the process so you can do it yourself...that don't happen... so there you go now you know that people are making good money off of telling you this is a bad thing... so yeah you're literally seeing somebody collect trash and making thousands of dollars off of it while doing it..
