Hostess Twinkies rose to icon status in the mid-1900s, becoming a mainstay in lunchboxes across America. But a heavy debt load and two bankruptcies almost killed Twinkies. In 2012, Twinkies left shelves for good... Until two guys, Andy and Dean, came up with a plan to save the iconic brand.

  • People forget that the union dispute was what led to (what we thought at the time) the end of Hostess and the company that bought Hostess and got them going again wasn't union-based. I remember one quote from a union worker saying around the time Hostess went under that he would rather lose his job altogether than take a pay cut. When Twinkies came back in July 2013, I tried my very first Twinkie. Boy was I missing out. Usually, I get the Hostess cupcakes. I still remember some in the media trying (and ultimately failing) to derail the Hostess comeback, citing that people are more calorie conscious and people had grown use to the alternate brands.

Finally, it's now more toxic than ever, to make shelf life longer. They essentially gutted the whole thing, with profit being the one and only concern.

We used to laugh and joke that Twinkies were now being made by the cat and dog food company! People moved on. Twinkies were not the same after 1988. They were smaller and they were not as tasty. • There was a time when you could be running an experiment at 11:00 pm and, getting a little tired, going down to the machines for a pack of Twinkies and a pint of ice cold milk. In 15 minutes you were bouncing off the walls. Hit the wall peddling up that hill on University Avenue from the river and discover yourself moving about five miles an hour? Into a gas station for Twinkies and milk. What hill? Then someone thought HFCS was better. Twinkies got sticky. They didn't stick to the cardboard and then they stuck so well that a layer was always left behind. And they lost all of their magic. If you were a Twinkie fan, the "Twinkie Defense" wasn't as implausible as it may seem. Alcoholics loved Twinkies for reasons I never learned. And for kids? Nothing better to distract them from being trained to be office pogues and tolerate sitting still, obeying instructions, and NEVER talking back...and now, of course, the 'modern' parent is destroying the creativity of an entire generation of Americans with drugs. Thomas Alva Edison was the ABSOLUTE poster child for ADHD. His mother took him home and created the practical light bulb, sound recording, video (film) recording, et alia, but none of our 'difficult' children will grow as they should and provide us with their own original perspectives. Anyway, Twinkies! The once king of all restorative snacks, murdered, as is so much, by Corporate incompetence. When we see the sales history of this company, it's very clear that no one along the line was very bright. sigh

    xseqerxseqer6 hari yang lalu
    • Just to be clear, those were the OLD Twinkies. When the HFCS was used, they may have messed with some of the other chemistry of the recipe. Whatever they did, while it still was a snack for fat people, it had lost that 'get up and move and do something' effect, for me at least. Haven't tried one lately but seem to recall having one that was singly packed and it was a waste of time.

  • When "hostess" came back a couple years ago after being gone then bought out, most of it was trash. Really bad (the suzy Q's were inedible and an abomination to the name) and the twinkies were tiny and nothing had any filling in them, like 10-20% of what they had before. Since then they have gotten better. Suzy Q's are now like they once were (if you can find them for sale anywhere) and Twinkies, while still on the small side, at least have a reasonable amount of filling now.

  • Interesting. I haven't eaten or touched a Twinkie in decades. I remember seeing the news when the company closed its doors. People were losing their minds, though I didn't understand why. My feeling at the time was that it was no great loss. To my surprise, people who never, ever ate Twinkies were suddenly panic shopping in search of those little sugar bombs. I guess the psychological theory is true..... if you want to create demand, tell people they can't have any.

Steve HawkinsSteve Hawkins7 hari yang lalu
  • The taste of Twinkies changed after the first bankruptcy so they did something to change the ingredients, probably to manufacture cheaper. Then the taste changed again when they changed the shelf life and now they are no where near the same as when I was a kid in 1960s. I don't even buy them anymore. Same for the cupcakes. They are terrible now.
