Researchers at the University of California San Diego have figured out how to turn algae into flip flops. They founded a startup to sell the shoe, but face a challenge in getting their invention mass produced: There aren't enough algae farms to support the startup's supply chain.

  • Every flood, tsunami, hurricane/monsoon, and tornado inundates rivers and oceans with man-made materials. Add cargo going overboard and fully loaded cargo ships sinking to the 100000s of tons of inorganic material flooding into our rivers and oceans every year. The problem is massive. Flip flops have been washing onto beaches since they were first invented. It is up to each one of us to not only lobby our governments to ban non-recyclable foam plastics, but to demand more recyclable material from all manufacturers. Vertical algae farming is one of the ways we can move forward to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. This series has exposed me to many more sustainable products. One that surprised me is the banana fiber. Each spring I plant ornamental banana plants. I was familiar with the tough fibers. However I had no idea they were so useful. Imagine how much of this fiber could be use to reduce synthetic fibers with an investment new, more efficient equipment to separate and dry the banana fiber. And to think of all of the burning we'd stop. They are literally burning money when they torch the stalks. After the fiber are extracted, they're left with a nutrient rich pulp read to be added to soil on farms. However, not all "sustainable" products are equal. When bamboo products hit the market they were sustainable. Then rainforest started to disappear. Farmers and a few large companies were expanding their farms to make more room for bamboo. When choosing a sustainable or green product be sure it's really that. Many manufacturers will only source from sustainable or green producers or farms. Just because bamboo is sustainable doesn't mean its green. Especially when it comes to deforestation and using fertilizers, fungicides, and/or pesticides. Thank you for this series. It's opened my eyes and inspired me to seek out many of these sustainable products. Cheers!

  • Its like.......animal excrement behaviour. We make something, become obsessed with the object for the 1 purpose we made it for, and then we drop it after disinterest. It's such an ignorant process honestly. I like these "alternatives". But I'd really like to see how people upcycle "flip-flops" and sandals in general? Or just someone who has been able to preserve and continue to use and "maintain" (if you can) one pair of sandals, for like 33 years or something. THAT'D show some kind of progress in our human behaviour.

You are doing a great great work by reducing the use of plastic foams and it is extremely surprising to see that algae can be used to make shoes. It would be an honour to work with you.
