How Aerial Firefighter Pilots Are Trained | What It Takes
Aerial firefighters go through intense training before they're ready to fight active wildfires from the sky. Government agencies like the US Forest Service and state governments contract Bridger Aerospace to provide the planes and pilots used to battle blazes that threaten property and human life. We spent three days with Bridger's training team in Mesa, Arizona, where a new class of pilots and technicians trained for the 2021 fire season in the company's signature firefighting aircraft known as the Super Scooper. This $30 million "flying boat" scoops up 1,400 gallons of water before deploying it on an area affected by a wildfire.

How Aerial Firefighter Pilots Are Trained | What It Takes
scoop an poop
We still don’t know how they scoop up water. It would have been nice to see how.
This plane looks like modified PBY Catalina
0:42 "yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehah" - random fish, maybe
I was driving through lake roosevelt about a month or so ago.... doing test drops from a similar plane- wonder if it was them filming!
clicked on this video cuz Ive flown this plane in gta5, thats cool
They're basically bombers, but they only drop water.
🇺🇸🇨🇦💯heros🙏👌👍
Great Service 🙏
Fighter Pilot will be like, too easy
@TERRY JOHNSON hmmm you got a point but still the fighter pilot much be able to tolerate high G up to 9G and be vigilant, do you every see a jet fly around mountain? Those look sick
Fighter pilots since WW 2 usually fail at this job. Long explaination. They don't have the background for this type of flying. We don't shoot down enemy airplanes, they don't drop on fires.
I wish they mobile game simulations for this.
why did you not do austraila fires
This is the Aircraft Australia needs.
Er.. ah... Australia is a bit short on scoopable water. This type airplane needs to be near lakes.
HELLO
So basically avatar.
So, with bitcoin hitting the $56,000 mark, the question on everyone’s mind is: What’s next? What does the future hold in terms of price, regulation and adoption of this “digital gold?” I actually wasn’t left out I started investing with Luís when it was $30,000 and today I I’m benefiting from it. Sir luiz platform actually make you earn 10x the amount you invest in crypto..
Thanks Luiz .+1.8.0.3.5.6.6.0.6.9.7..
i’m just here for the narrator, i love his voice
Working for Bombardier challenger, this is still my favorite aircraft! Basically I flying tank! I have in the past seen this aircraft in the assembly plant here in Montréal before it was sold to viking air. I have also inspected some of the composite parts such as the water holding tanks etc. I am at the moment designing one to 3d print for rc!
This has always been a dream career for me
What risk 😂😂😂 your flying a plane with water or powder
U can laugh until ul fly less than 60 feet when ur dropping. If a rate of 52% of fatality for this job isnt risky then i dont know what it is....
love it
This is nice, but the future is aerial wildfire bombing, with bombs full with the fire retardant agent in powder form, and with an explosive core
@TERRY JOHNSON well, we have new technologies this days, bombs can be controlled with GPS and movable fins, they can have a proximity sensor to detonate close to the ground, a single plane can set the coordinates for each bomb, whereas current aerial water drop only goes in a line, can't hit multiple targets
Maybe not, it was tried back in the 50's the direct liquid attack has proven best. Blowing the powder all over the county with an explosive core, (disregarding the human firefighters in the area) seems like a waste of powder to me. 28 years experience in aerial firefighting. Fire line explosive is an effective way to fight fire with enough people to get it out there. But dropping it from and airplane is currently not safe, and really unreliable.
These are best for remote areas where manual refill is difficult. Alaska and Canada's far north have massive forest fires every summer, with few landing or servicing areas available, but many lakes. Also the retardant is a carcinogen, so some towns prefer water for health reasons.
Safe flights to all Fire Fighter Crews !
they do shit nothing, they make more fires over the world spraing piro particles...
i mean not specially this guys but firefighers generally & Millitary!!!
These guys are real heroes
I'd do this job in a heartbeat!
Adler went from fighting the Russians to dropping water from a plane
Look mummy, that plane pissed himself!
Would be interesting to know how you make sure there aren’t any boats as well.
They look out the windshield.
Visual identification is my guess. A preemptive low pass over the intended fill-up area could also send a clear message to any neighbouring boats about your intensions
I remember being on a Spanish beach years ago where a 4 prop engine aircraft doing this in the bay. The next day we went out on a jeep safari right through where the fire had been and it was amazing just how much it had saved. But nothing cooler, than sitting on the beach, having these take back off under full smack right over your head! Epic sound!!!
When you also wanna be a pilot and a firefighter😏
1:27 Look at the open door. On the inside of the door, there's a sign that says "Do not open door in flight".
I do my flight training at Mesa gateway. I saw this filmed and saw it sitting on the ramp
I recently graduated from ASU-Poly. Did some flight training at Gateway as well before switching to management. I was actually there the same week they posted this video. I got to see the start up procedure. A little anti-climatic though since they turned off the engines and I didn’t get to see them take off. A very cool airplane indeed.
I saw the plane parked at Mesa gateway airport in arizona
TY 😊

Hi
Very cool...HOW do you scoop up that water tho? Do you feel the water dump/pick up...and how hard does that hit the ground? Like would it knock you out...kill you..crush a car?
idworlds.info/from/tbOWh9PLgWmsfKM/video it's a bit more powerful than rain
I wish this plane was invented before the 9/11 tragedy. It couldve possibly reduced the initial fires. Correct me if im wrong. Respect the brave souls.
You are wrong. It would have been as worthless as a buckle on a dishrag to try to drop from an airplane on those fires. Helicopters with close water may have helped, but keep in mind when they are dropping, no one is on the fire. Can't have both at once. And by the way, the first air tanker (fire bombers to the unwashed) were flown in California in 1955, some time before 911.
9/11 wasn't just fire, it also was structural damage, and I think it would have been too dangerous and difficult for them to attempt it, because I think the water might have actually made the structural damage worse.
They already had fire fighting planes in 2001.
That's what every CEO should be like, doing stuff that everyone does.
@Saeteune hell yeah! How good!!
@Lone Wolf Fr I was like why does this guy look like some special forces dude and the next thing they say is that he’s A MF NAVY SEAL lmao
Ex Seal, badass to the bone!
In Croatian Air Force we call them: "kanaderi" from Canadair... 😊
I bet they would take this as a compliment.
Okay wait.. 30million for one of those, there's no way those things look like their built so cheaply.
That’s aircraft for you
Its $1 000 a pound. Crazy!
Unsung heroes 💜💜
Thumbnail : Normal Firefighting plane Me : *lego*
*Heroes !*
i remember the 'Planes' movie
Obviously a cartoon, BUT more accurate in terminology, and techniques than Always.. Taking out the vertical scoop in the waterfall.. that was a bit far fetched.
I always wonder how they can make the water hit the fires without missing.
Keith, it's practice. I did it for 28 years, in land based tankers. I never flew a scooper, knew a few who did. I am seaplane rated, and understand some of t he problems of that type of tanker flying. But once they are out of the water, and we are off the runway it's all firefighting. Like anything else, it can be learned by some. Some will never figure it out.
nice PR stunt
It's a little mind blowing trying to imagine being the first person to write the procedures for something like this.
Written in blood. A lot of people died before procedures were in place.
I wish this was longer!
Did they model Dipper from Planes Fire and Rescue after this plane
I think so. I think i read on imdb or something that she was
Love the CL 415, but all rc models i know, fly like crap
A firefighter goes in the cockpit and tells the pilot to take off immediately. When in the air he then tells him the coordinates he needs to fly to. When they reach the smoke, he tells him to fly straight over the flames. At that point the pilot looks at him and nervously says "You're not my flight instructor, are you!?!"
@TERRY JOHNSON its a joke
I flew heavy air tankers, I've never had anyone in my flight deck tell me when to take off, where to go, and for the love of God not now to attack the fire.
I seriously thought that the thumbnail had a Lego plane in it.
AWESOME !!!!!!!!!
AMAZING !!!!!!!
COOL +++++++++++++++++++++
That’s no where near the training for dauntless dive bombing Still would be epic to do that tho
Nice video.
These aircraft were lifesavers in California's 2020 fires.
@Chris Clifford ugh ok
Hey tell the guy who made the atomic bomb He had terrible design plans for putting out fires.
A bunch of PART-TIME goobers compared to the military/full--time professionals that fly the same plane in some of the southern European countries (ex: Spain, France, Italy, etc.)
Drink, you should learn what you are saying before you say it. Us "Part time Goobers" do a hell of a lot better job than the full time military when it comes to fighting fire. There is a reason they fight wars and we fight fires. It's somewhat different. In the history of air tankers, military pilots, (since the WW2 Korean war buch) have for the most part failed, or been less effective than the civilian counterparts. The military's job is not to put a liquid in a hostile environment very close to a raging fire with 95% accuracy. Their job is to get into hostile environments, land and unload. We do different things. I can't fly a fighter with any degree of professionalism, a fighter pilot can't start my Lockheed P2V, let alone fly it on a fire.
What they need to drop is some weight on their only bodies first. They look way too fat and taken away too much water capacity for the plane.
Mandy,,, Mandy...Mandy... If the fattest tanker pilot in the world lost 50% of his body weight he could haul maybe 10 gallons more. That is 3% of a multi thousand gallon load. Not enough to consider. And besides, in the P2 we were flying 2,000 pounds under max gross take off. Never saw a tanker pilot or an over arrogant woman who weighed 2,000 pound.
@Mandy W wow dude thats rude as hell
Cool! I wanna sign-up!

pretty neat
Looks like fun to me.🤙🏿
When h hear this narrators voice, yk the vid is gna be good
I've missed this guy's voice
This job is soo amazing
@Chris Sain scam
00:30 the reaction I get when I'm with my GF
@Chris Sain deadass
They should find a powder that contains water too so the fire will stop quickly. Cuz when u put water it may have chance that a fire can cause more fire.
Not sure what you are talking about. Fire retardant is a powder that is mixed with water. Plain water dropped from proper height has a wonderful effect on fire retardant.
Wtf are you smoking on son?
This video was filmed at Roosevelt Lake in Gila County, Arizona. Just last year one of the largest fires in the states history burned the entire surrounding area.
@Kyler no sorry there was a fake Business Insider account trying to scam people by replying that they have secret investment tips. The comments was probably deleted for spam. You can check other replies for prove or just check my other replies on this channel
@Aiman Iskandar not a scam. This video was filmed at Roosevelt lake. The Bridger c145 was stationed at Mesa gateway airport. I had the privilege of going on a plane tour of that aircraft

Love the invasion stripes! Nice job Al!
*We should defund them to stop wildfires and climate change. I saw them deliberately lighting forest in the name of fire control! This is bullshit!*
Lol it wouldn't put out a stick on fire so small I saw helicopters drop more water
There are only two types of helicopters that can carry as much water as the 415. I've seen them put out some serious hot spots. Don't speak like this unless you have breathed a lot of smoke.

step one- get your pilot licence step two- become a firefighter
Imagine not using the metric system bruh
We've never used the metric system in the US.. and we share the most effective aerial firefighting systems with Canada, who does. Perhaps it doesn't matter much if you are dropping litres on hecteres, or gallons on acres. The temprature could be 900 d. F.. or 482 C.... It's all pretty much the same. I dropped retardant on fires for 28 years and never looked at a tape measure once.

How many scoops and poops can you make on one full fuel load?
How far from the fire to the water? How far from the gas pump to the fire? Not an answerable question.
I mean I guess it would be dependent on the range and flight path of the aircraft. Not to mention placement of a usable body of water and compatible airfield. and we don't know the full range of the aircraft. I guess that would be a Google question. What do you think business insider?

Respect to these guys , my dads in the army and he has had to jump out of planes and stuff like that , but never over fire
@James Lowe yes they are, it takes hard men to do hard things. Men of steel.
@Kipruto Bett yeah , those guys are crazy but necessary !
Have you heard of smoke jumpers?
First
Aerofighters train hard to practice accuracy in executing various rescue operations 😊.

Imagine being a fish just chilling in the ocean and then a plane picks you up.
Natural selection at its finest
The door goes one to one and a half inches into the water,,, 2.5 cm.. to 3 cm.. very small fish very close to the surface. Could happen I guess.
@Simon Rancourt stupid too.
@Kipruto Bett Far beyond a myth. The door where that person was scooped up is about five inches wide and opens maybe two inches. Not many people would fit in that. Any opening in the bottom of a sea plane that would be big enough to pick up a very small child would wreak the airplane when it touched the water.
haha ya im really worried they gonna hit driftwood need a bumper on this
I bet we’re gonna have A380’s fighting fires within the next 10 years
I think Airbus 400m
The current 747 Supertanker is nowhere near its maximum take off weight, even witv a full load of fire retardant. I think an A380 would fit the purpose relatively well, except for the huge infrastructure on the ground that is needed
@BloxyWasTaken Arsenal Yeah ik. But just reminding you that we converted a 744 to firefight...
@BloxyWasTaken Arsenal yes, these airplanes are purpose built. I think there are design limits as to the weight and size their airframes can be to perform such roles
there commercial jets that are not made for putting out fires and due to the size the handling of it is not fit for these situations
This is the type of videos I subbed for.
SAME!!
Congrats to everyone that is not early and not saying first
There's more things to be concerned about.
