Ceylon cinnamon is native to just one region of the world. And producing it requires hours of delicate work. Even the most skilled workers can make only a few pounds of quills a day. One pound of cinnamon quills can cost $27. But not all spices labeled "cinnamon" are the Ceylon variety. Many in the Western market are actually cheaper types of cinnamon called cassia. So what makes Ceylon cinnamon so favorable? And why is it so expensive?

  • We grow and export cinamon from Sri Lanka (Ceylon), it is not true that the labor is cheap. The peelers charge 50% of the market value that is their service charge. Not everyone can peel, it an art passed on by their forefathers and You can't employ them, they work like freelancers. If they only rely on cinamon peeling as income then they won't make much money as harvest is not done every month.

  • It is sad and unfair that the cinnamon farmers live in poor conditions despite their cinnamon having such a high price. On another note: i bought a cinnamon tree and give it to a relative that lives in a place with the right conditions for growing it. Although, the problem is that the nursery ( that I got the cinnamon tree from) said it is Ceylon cinnamon but how can I verify it? What if it is a Cassia type? I did ask my friend google but no much help on it. Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

  • Why are those expensive products always produced by poor people? Like how can this cinnamon cost like 27$ but the people producing them need to live in mud huts and don't even have enough money to get their teeth fixed? I am guessing those workers get like 1$/hour of work and most of the profit form thos cinnamons go to some big brand who buys them for cheap from them and inflates their price to 27$....

I see this cinnemon vanishing in the coming years, the substitute is pretty good and has more taste, at a lower cost.
